In the everyday Chinese market, "London Gold" and "Spot Gold" are frequently mentioned together. They are highly related, yet strictly speaking, they are not completely identical in all contexts. London Gold refers more to the international over-the-counter gold market and settlement system centered in London, while "Spot Gold" is a broader concept for pricing and trading.

First, Understand What "London" Stands For

Many new traders assume London Gold means gold traded inside a physical exchange hall in London. In fact, a key feature of the London gold market is its over-the-counter structure. According to the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) introduction to the Loco London market, participants conduct trades on a bilateral basis. Clients, institutions and market players are located across many countries and regions, with London serving as the vital hub for global gold clearing and settlement.

Therefore, "London" in London Gold mainly represents the market system and settlement location, and it does not mean the gold has to be mined or produced in London.

Why Spot Gold Is a Broader Term

"Spot Gold" is generally used to distinguish it from gold futures and other products with specified contract months. When traders see XAU/USD on market software, it is commonly referred to as the international spot gold price.

For this reason, in many regular market articles: London Gold International Spot Gold XAU/USD often appear within the same context.

From a professional perspective, however, these three terms carry different emphases. XAU/USD is primarily a quotation notation for gold priced against the US dollar; London Gold highlights the Loco London market system; Spot Gold emphasizes its spot market nature as opposed to futures products.

Why Quotes Are Usually Denominated in US Dollars per Ounce

When LBMA quotes international gold market prices, US dollars and troy ounces are the core pricing units. The ounce used here is not the ordinary ounce in common weight systems but the troy ounce. One troy ounce equals approximately 31.1035 grams. Hence, when the spot gold price shows a certain US dollar figure, it indicates the US dollar price for each troy ounce of gold. This is the foundation for understanding international gold pricing.

London Gold Is Not the Same as Physical Gold

A rise in gold prices does not mean all gold products will increase at the exact same rate. Physical gold such as gold bars, gold coins and gold jewellery involves manufacturing, transportation, distribution and retail costs. Consequently, retail prices can differ noticeably from international spot gold quotes. London Gold tracks price movements on the global gold market instead of the final retail price per gram at jewellery stores.

Lucky Gold: Separate Product Names from Quotation Systems

New traders of London Gold often fall into the trap of thinking all gold products are identical just because they contain the word "gold". When reviewing market quotes, you may start with three simple questions: What product am I viewing? What pricing unit is applied? From which market system is this price sourced?

Once these three points are clear, reading articles about live London Gold quotes, spot gold prices or international gold rates will become much easier.
