The logic of partial position closing is straightforward: instead of closing the entire position in one go, you close only a portion while leaving the remaining lots open in the market. Availability and specific operation methods are subject to the functions of the trading terminal in use. If partial closing is supported by the terminal, the most critical details to verify are "how many lots to close this time" and "how many lots remain".

What Happens When Closing 0.5 Lot from 1 Lot

Suppose you hold 1 lot of London Gold and choose to close 0.5 lot. The closed 0.5 lot will generate realised profit or loss, while the remaining 0.5 lot continues to produce floating profit or loss based on market prices.

The original position will not be re-opened due to partial closing. The remaining position follows the original holding rules, and the margin occupied in the account will adjust according to the remaining lot size.

Keep Realised Profit/Loss and Floating Profit/Loss Separated

The result from the closed 0.5 lot will be reflected in the confirmed fund changes of your account. The remaining 0.5 lot is still open and therefore shows floating profit or loss.

If you only check the account balance at this point, you may overlook the open position. A more complete approach is to review the balance, equity and remaining position together.

How Does Margin Change

Lucky Gold calculates margin for London Gold on a per-lot basis. After the position is reduced from 1 lot to 0.5 lot, the corresponding occupied margin will decrease accordingly, and the released portion will return to available margin.

If there are other orders in the account, the total margin must include all other open positions.

Why Some Traders Prefer Partial Closing

Some traders close part of their positions once the first target level is reached to lock in partial gains, and let the remaining positions run with the market trend.

This method offers flexible adjustments, yet it does not automatically eliminate existing market risks. The remaining position will still generate profit or loss as prices fluctuate.

Decimal Points Are the Most Common Source of Errors When Placing Orders

1 lot, 0.5 lot and 0.05 lot only differ in decimal placement, but represent vastly different contract sizes. Before performing partial closing, double-check whether the input figure is "the number of lots to close" or "the number of lots you wish to keep". Different terminal interfaces may use different wording.

If you are unfamiliar with the operation, practise with small lot sizes or in a demo environment. This is safer than trying to figure out the steps while holding live positions.

Partial Closing Splits Your Position into Two Separate Outcomes

Assume you buy 1 lot of London Gold near USD 4300. Later the price rises to USD 4310, and you decide to close 0.5 lot first. The system settles the profit or loss for this 0.5 lot into your account balance, and the remaining 0.5 lot stays open under the original entry details. At this point, your account holds two separate results: the realised outcome from the 0.5 lot and the floating position of the remaining 0.5 lot.

If prices keep rising afterward, the remaining 0.5 lot continues to accumulate floating profits. If the market reverses downward, the floating profit of the remaining position shrinks or even turns into a floating loss. The portion already closed will no longer be affected by market movements, as it becomes part of historical transaction records.

Why Margin Is Released After Partial Closing

After partial closing, the number of open lots decreases, and occupied margin falls accordingly. Taking the current London Gold margin requirement of USD 1000 per lot as an example: 1 lot theoretically occupies USD 1000 in margin. After closing 0.5 lot, the remaining 0.5 lot requires approximately USD 500 of margin. With other conditions unchanged, available margin increases as a result.

This is one of the common practical benefits of partial closing: you can lock in part of your profit while reducing the capital occupied by the remaining position. Nevertheless, margin, equity and available margin change in real time with market movements. Actual figures shall be subject to the trading terminal.

Suitable Scenarios for Partial Closing

Some traders close part of their positions once the market hits the first target level and keep the rest under observation. Others reduce position size via partial closing when market volatility surges suddenly. These are position management techniques with no universal template.

It is important to note that partial closing does not change the market direction of the remaining position. If it was a long position, what remains is still a long position; if it was a short position, the remaining part still bears short-side risk. Cutting the lot size in half only reduces the monetary impact of each USD price fluctuation proportionally.

Confirm the Minimum Trading Unit Allowed by the Platform Before Order Placement

When executing partial closing, both the lots to close and remaining lots must comply with the lot rules of the trading system. Lucky Gold’s current minimum trading volume is 0.01 lot. Splitting 1 lot into 0.5, 0.3 or 0.2 lots is generally feasible. However, if you only hold 0.01 lot originally, it cannot be split further into smaller units.

We recommend planning for partial closing before opening a position, instead of making hasty decisions amid sharp market swings. Define your trading plan clearly: how many lots to close at the first target, how many to retain, and where to place the stop-loss. This makes execution much simpler.

Risk Warning: Partial closing only adjusts position size and cannot eliminate market risks associated with remaining positions. Available functions and execution rules are subject to the current trading terminal.
