The timestamp shown on a news page is not necessarily the time when the event took place.

When checking the timing of gold news, distinguish between the time of the event itself, the original release time, the repost time by media outlets, and subsequent updates. These timestamps may fall on different dates and follow different time zones. A news story published on a Chinese webpage today may cover an event that happened yesterday. You cannot conclude that it drove today’s market movement merely based on the repost timestamp.

Official economic reports usually state their release time clearly. For example, the August 2026 Personal Income and Outlays report from the BEA notes its release at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on September 30, 2026. Beijing Time is 12 hours ahead of EDT, equivalent to 20:30 on the same day.

Dates also need verification during time conversion

Eastern Daylight Time is UTC−4, while Eastern Standard Time is UTC−5. Beijing Time is UTC+8, creating a 12-hour difference for EDT and a 13-hour difference for EST. Do not convert 8:30 a.m. ET to 20:30 Beijing Time for the whole year.

According to NIST, US daylight saving time in 2026 starts at 2:00 a.m. local time on March 8 and ends at 2:00 a.m. on November 1. If an official announcement marks EDT or EST, convert the time following that label. If only ET is stated, judge based on the event date.

Cross-day shifts are another consideration. If a document is released at 2:00 p.m. EDT, the corresponding Beijing Time will be 2:00 a.m. the next day. When logging dates, record the full daily offset instead of adjusting only the hour value.

Can an update timestamp be treated as new news?

It depends on what the update contains. New datasets, official corrections, and full transcripts of remarks may deliver fresh information. Layout adjustments, image replacements or link changes generally do not alter the substance of the event. The fact that a webpage shows an update does not by itself prove that the market has just received new facts.

If no update notes are available, keep both the original release time and the latest displayed update time on the page, and add a note that the content of the update is unconfirmed. Avoid guessing the exact minute this piece of information reached the market.

Beyond timestamps, check whether reposting has distorted the original meaning. Personal remarks from officials should not be rewritten as Federal Reserve decisions, and possible outcomes must not be framed as things that have already occurred. Such qualifiers shape the meaning of news and should be retained when building a timeline.

How to build a verifiable timeline for a gold news item?

Open the original announcement first, and save its title, link, date, time zone and full text. Then record the timestamp and source of the repost page, and confirm whether it includes new facts. Finally, convert all timestamps to a unified time zone and match them against timestamps on gold price charts.

The first three entries in the sample table come from the BEA report and the above time zone conversion, while the last two outline recording requirements. Even after building the timeline, separate correlation from causation: price swings after news release are only a starting point for investigation. A chronological sequence alone cannot confirm a single cause.

Verify scheduled events via the economic calendar, cross-check news with market flashes, and review exclusive insights for historical analysis. Preserving original timestamps and content versions reduces misjudgements where old news is mistaken for a fresh market driver.

Risk Warning: News timelines are used for information verification only. They cannot explain all market volatility and do not constitute trading advice.
