Every FOMC meeting has a policy decision, but not every meeting has a new SEP

Some Federal Reserve meetings end with a policy statement, a press conference and a fresh set of economic projections, while others do not include new projections. That difference is intentional. The FOMC normally holds eight scheduled meetings a year, while the Summary of Economic Projections, or SEP, is released four times a year, typically alongside the March, June, September and December meetings.

So every meeting produces a new policy decision, but not every meeting refreshes the economic forecast. When there is no SEP, markets still compare the policy statement carefully because even small wording changes can alter expectations for the future policy path. For more on that process, see Why Small Wording Shifts in Fed Statements Cause Big Gold Volatility.

Why aren't economic projections updated at every meeting?

The SEP is not a forecast of next month's single data release. It summarizes FOMC participants' views on real GDP growth, unemployment, PCE inflation, core PCE inflation and the policy-rate path each participant considers appropriate over the coming years. These variables describe a medium-term outlook, so they do not need to be refreshed as frequently as monthly economic indicators.

A roughly quarterly update also makes it easier to identify meaningful shifts in policymakers' views instead of treating every small change between meetings as a new medium-term forecast. The SEP reflects individual participant projections; it is not a collective promise that the Committee will follow a fixed path.

Which meetings deserve extra attention for the SEP?

Under the current schedule, the March, June, September and December meetings normally include an SEP. In addition to the rate decision and statement, these meetings provide a new set of figures that can be compared with the previous quarter, including growth, unemployment, inflation and policy-rate projections.

A meeting can leave the current policy rate unchanged while still changing the market's view of what comes next. For example, higher inflation projections or a higher projected appropriate policy-rate path can lead investors to reassess the pace of future easing or tightening. The dot plot is the visual presentation of those rate projections; see How the Fed Dot Plot Affects Gold Pricing.

A meeting without an SEP can still be important

No new economic projections does not mean the Fed has stopped reassessing the economy. The FOMC still considers the latest information on employment, inflation and economic activity when making its decision; it simply does not publish a complete new projection package after every meeting.

At non-SEP meetings, more attention may fall on the policy statement, the decision itself and how the Chair explains current conditions. The press conference can add context that a short statement cannot, so it can be useful to read it alongside How Should Gold Traders Read a Fed Chair Press Conference?

Why should gold investors distinguish between the two types of meetings?

Gold markets respond not only to the current policy rate but also to changing expectations for future rates, inflation, the dollar and bond yields. SEP meetings add a second layer of information because investors must process both the immediate policy decision and a new set of economic projections. Even when the rate decision matches expectations, forecast revisions can still trigger repricing.

At meetings without a new SEP, markets rely more heavily on changes in statement language and the Chair's explanations. Both types of meetings can move gold; the difference is where investors are most likely to find new information.

Check the calendar for an SEP before reading the meeting

A practical first step is to determine whether the meeting includes updated projections. If it does, compare growth, unemployment, inflation and the projected policy path with the previous SEP. If it does not, focus more closely on the statement and press conference. That distinction helps explain why meetings with the same FOMC label can carry very different information density and market focus.
