When the pending-order price is reached, the order may enter the triggering process; this does not mean execution has been completed. MetaTrader 5's official trading documentation separates pending-order activation, market operations and deal records. Depending on the instrument, the trigger may be checked against Ask, Bid or the exchange Last price. Free margin, market quotes and fill policies must also be checked after activation. Start a review with the order status, then establish whether a deal actually occurred.

A pending order, its trigger and a deal are three separate steps

A pending order instructs a broker to trade in the future. A deal is a purchase or sale that has occurred, while a position is the obligation left after the deal. Each has its own tickets and status. A Buy Stop normally activates when the price rises to its specified level; a Buy Limit seeks a purchase when the price falls to its specified level or lower. The official documentation also notes that pending orders for exchange-traded shares, futures and similar instruments follow the exchange's trigger rules, commonly using Last. OTC gold Bid/Ask rules cannot simply be applied to them.

Consider a hypothetical OTC quote sequence used for teaching. A gold Buy Stop is set at USD 2330.0 per ounce, while the current Ask is 2328.0 and Bid is 2327.6. Ask later reaches 2330.0, satisfying the assumed trigger condition. If the server then cannot find a quote meeting execution conditions, or the account has insufficient free margin, the order may still be rejected rather than recorded as filled. This sequence illustrates why reaching the price and obtaining a fill must be verified separately; it does not describe every platform.

Stage What to check What it can establish
Pending order exists Order ticket, direction, type, specified price and expiry An instruction was submitted and had a particular status
Trigger check The relevant Ask, Bid or exchange Last Whether the instrument's trigger condition was satisfied
Execution request Free margin, quotes, trading session and execution policy Whether conditions allowed execution to proceed
Execution result Deal ticket, volume, price and order history Whether a deal actually occurred

The final column describes the limits of each piece of evidence. An order screenshot without the contemporaneous quote and historical status does not establish activation. A trigger log alone does not prove that the full volume was filled.

The quote side can make the chart appear not to have reached the price

Under common OTC quote conventions, purchases use Ask and sales use Bid. A Buy Stop is intended to buy as the price rises, so its trigger normally requires checking Ask. A Sell Stop requires checking the Bid used for selling. If a chart plots only Bid but a Buy Stop activates when Ask reaches 2330.0, the Bid line on the chart may not have touched 2330.0. The classroom article on gold Bid charts and short-position stops explains why chart prices, trigger quotes and execution prices must be separated.

This explanation applies only to the relevant quote and product rules. An exchange instrument may trigger on Last and then execute using Bid or Ask. Some platforms also apply different price checks under different execution modes. To review a pending order, obtain both quote sides or exchange transaction data for the same instrument, source and time zone. A live Ask quote from another platform cannot be inserted into a historical screenshot.

Why can an activated order be rejected or only partly filled?

The official trading-concepts page describes a common case: when a pending order activates, if the corresponding market operation cannot be executed, for example because free margin is insufficient, the order is canceled and moved to history with the status Rejected. Reaching the price has only satisfied a condition check; it does not guarantee that the required position volume can be opened.

The fill policy also affects the outcome. FOK requires the entire specified volume to be filled, otherwise nothing is filled; multiple available offers can supply that volume. IOC allows the volume currently available to be filled and cancels the remainder. Return may leave the remaining volume available for further processing, but availability depends on the trade server and execution mode. The documentation identifies these as order settings. Read back the actual policy instead of inferring it from the label pending order.

Suppose an order requests 0.5 lot and the account has sufficient margin, but only 0.3 lot is available under the relevant execution conditions. With FOK, the order may remain entirely unfilled because the full volume is unavailable. With an allowed IOC policy, 0.3 lot may be filled and the remaining 0.2 lot canceled. This illustrates insufficient executable volume; it does not establish that insufficient margin would automatically reduce the order to a smaller fill. Whether these policies are supported for the particular order, and how it executes after activation, must be checked against the product documents, server settings and order history.

Reconcile order status with deal records

Preserve four kinds of evidence in chronological order: pending-order creation, the relevant quote or Last at activation, order-status changes and the final deal ticket. If a platform log records activation but there is no deal ticket, check whether the order was subsequently rejected, canceled or partly filled. If a position appears, also compare its volume with the executed volume.

MetaTrader 5 links orders, deals and positions through tickets. When several pending orders exist for the same symbol, do not filter history by price alone. Two orders may use the same price but differ in direction, expiry or volume. Server time may also differ from Beijing time. Record the time-zone conversion method before reviewing the sequence.

Reaching the price does not remove risk

An unfilled pending order may avoid the intended market exposure, or it may miss a later price move. Neither outcome should be rewritten after the event as proof that a strategy was correct. Before resubmitting an order, reassess stop distance, lots, margin and the maximum acceptable loss. If the order was partly filled, promptly check that the open position has a stop and confirm which quote triggers it.

MetaTrader 5 Basic Principles explains pending-order types, trigger prices, execution prices and order states. Executing Trades covers trading operations and history. The classroom article on stop distance and account risk explains why price distance must be assessed together with product point value, volume, margin and account currency.

In margin trading, price changes after activation, slippage, insufficient liquidity and margin usage can increase actual losses. The prices 2330.0, 2328.0 and 2327.6 USD per ounce, and volumes of 0.3, 0.5 and 0.2 lot, are hypothetical teaching inputs. They are not current market prices, platform quotes or live trading records, and are not instructions to place an order.
