ATR measures a price distance and carries units

The raw ATR figures are not enough to determine which metal is more volatile. Average True Range (ATR) uses the same unit as the quoted price: if both gold and silver are quoted in USD per ounce, their ATR readings are also in USD per ounce. When the underlying price levels differ greatly, the metal with the larger absolute ATR may have a smaller movement relative to its own price. To examine the percentage of price represented by that range, calculate Average True Range Percent (ATRP) using consistent inputs. It still does not predict that the next candle must move by that amount.

For each bar, True Range is the greatest of three values: the high minus the low, the absolute difference between the high and previous close, and the absolute difference between the low and previous close. ATR then smooths a history of these ranges. This accounts for gaps between periods but does not record whether prices rose or fell. For the formula and Wilder smoothing method, consult StockCharts’ ATR calculation guide. The site’s article about candlestick shadows explains what the high and low record, while its introduction to ATR covers basic uses. Here the focus is unit consistency across instruments.

For instance, if a chart is priced in USD per ounce and its 14-period ATR reads 20, the algorithm describes a recent average true-range magnitude of 20 USD per ounce. This is not 20%, a trading cost of 20 dollars per ounce or a forecast of the next day’s gain or loss. Another chart using a different quote unit, contract, timeframe or source may give the same number a different meaning.

A hypothetical example of absolute versus relative magnitude

Assume both charts use completed daily candles, the same Beijing-time observation cutoff, USD-per-ounce quotations and the same 14-period ATR algorithm. Both the closing price and ATR come from completed candles. The following numbers are entirely hypothetical teaching values, not market quotations for 12 October 2026 and not evidence that any platform showed these prices:

Teaching instrument Close (USD/oz) 14-period ATR (USD/oz) ATRP = ATR ÷ close × 100%
Gold 2,000 20 1%
Silver 25 0.75 3%

In raw terms, 20 exceeds 0.75. But relative to each price, gold has 20 ÷ 2,000 × 100% = 1% and silver has 0.75 ÷ 25 × 100% = 3%. The hypothetical ranking therefore changes when comparing absolute price distance rather than relative distance. It does not establish that silver is always more volatile than gold in reality, or that trading silver is exactly three times as risky.

StockCharts’ ATRP guide uses ATR ÷ closing price × 100 so charts with different price levels can be compared on a percentage scale. If software does not supply ATRP, it can be calculated from verified ATR and the close of the same bar. Do not divide today’s live ATR by yesterday’s close and describe it as a same-time comparison.

Price level also matters when comparing the same instrument across periods. As a separate arithmetic illustration, if ATR remains at 20 USD per ounce, ATRP is 1% with a close of 2,000 USD per ounce but 0.5% with a close of 4,000 USD per ounce. This does not assert that such a sequence actually occurred. Equal raw ATR values mean equal absolute ranges under the same method, not necessarily equal percentages of the prevailing price.

Percentage comparisons still require matching conditions

A 14-period setting means 14 bars of the chosen timeframe. Fourteen hourly bars do not cover the same time span as fourteen daily bars. Platforms may also differ in daily session cutoffs, holidays, missing candles, quote providers and smoothing seeds. Record at least the instrument and contract, price units, timeframe, time zone and closing boundaries, ATR length and algorithm, and observation time. Without those details, two-decimal precision may merely disguise inconsistent inputs.

When comparing gold and silver on the same date, do not use a completed daily candle for one and a still-forming daily candle for the other. Before the close, the current high, low and latest price may change, and the ATR and any ATRP using the latest price as its denominator may change with them. Save matching observation times, ideally wait for the relevant bars to close, and compare values that can be checked later. Small differences caused by displayed rounding should first be investigated against the underlying precision.

Volatility itself also has several definitions. ATR and ATRP describe historical True Range over chart bars; standard deviation of returns and options-implied volatility are different measures, and their values are not interchangeable. A higher ATRP means a greater relative historical range under the stated method, not a direction signal, event probability or maximum range for the next period.

ATRP is not a position-size or stop-loss formula

Even if two metals’ ATRP readings are directly comparable, trading profit and loss depend on contract size, ounces per lot, point value, spread, leverage, margin and actual execution price. Equal percentage ranges do not imply equal monetary loss for positions funded with the same margin. Nor is a stop placed one ATR away automatically safe: ordinary volatility can trigger it, and price gaps or poor liquidity can cause execution away from the expected level. The site’s article on stop-loss and account risk distinguishes price distance from account risk.

It is also wrong to read the hypothetical silver ATRP of 3% as “silver might lose 3% tomorrow.” The figure is a historical price range relative to a closing price, not a holding-period return or a maximum loss. In margin trading, the percentage change in the market price, the percentage of a contract’s notional value and the percentage of account equity all use different denominators. Monetary profit or loss cannot be estimated without the specific product’s contract terms and position size; this example provides neither and calculates no real account outcome.

When someone says gold ATR is higher than silver ATR, first ask which units and periods were used, then decide whether the question concerns absolute distance or relative percentage. ATRP is a clear way to convert to percentages, but trading suitability requires separate assessment of contract specifications and affordable losses. These indicators describe past price ranges; they do not guarantee future prices or fills.
