The Two Prices Observe Different Timeframes

When reviewing Gold T+D market quotes, beginners often notice that the closing price and settlement price displayed after the trading session closes are not identical. Since both prices are established on the same trading day, why do two distinct figures exist? The reason lies in their differing scopes of underlying transaction data and their distinct operational functions.

According to the Auction Trading Rules of the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE), the closing price is calculated as the volume-weighted average price of the contract's final five transactions of the day. In contrast, the settlement price is defined as the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) across all executed trades throughout the entire trading day. While one reflects market conditions immediately prior to the session close, the other captures the overall average execution level for the entire day. Consequently, divergence between the two metrics is a standard market phenomenon.

The Closing Price Reflects Late-Session Price Action

The closing price primarily captures market activity during the final moments of the trading day. For instance, if Gold T+D trades at lower price levels for the majority of daytime hours before surging rapidly near the close, the execution prices of the final five transactions will likely be significantly higher than the day's average, resulting in a relatively elevated closing price.

Conversely, if price action remains firm throughout the day but experiences a sharp pull-back near the close, the closing price may settle below the primary volume cluster. Thus, while the closing price helps traders understand where the market stood at the end of the day, it does not represent the average execution price across all market participants.

It is worth noting that an SGE trading day encompasses both night and day trading sessions; therefore, the "entire trading day" referenced during settlement extends well beyond the final afternoon window. Gold T+D operates under a daily mark-to-market system where position balances and account equity are processed following daily session closes.

The Settlement Price Emphasizes Daily Volume Distribution

The settlement price incorporates all trade prices and corresponding transaction volumes executed throughout the trading session. Price ranges with higher trading activity exert a proportionally greater influence on the final settlement calculation.

For example, if most Gold T+D transactions occur near 690 RMB per gram while a small volume spike pushes prices to 700 RMB near the close, the closing price will approach 700 RMB, whereas the settlement price will remain anchored near 690 RMB where volume concentrated. Conversely, if late-session rallies are backed by substantial trading volume, the settlement price will converge closer to the closing price.

Therefore, the settlement price is neither a simple arithmetic average of the open, high, low, and close prices, nor is it merely the final executed tick of the day. It represents a volume-weighted composite outcome driven by price and liquidity distribution across the session.

Conclusion

Understanding the structural differences between Gold T+D closing prices and settlement prices is essential for grasping daily account clearing adjustments and risk management protocols. Traders should utilize both metrics in their appropriate operational contexts to build a rigorous analytical mindset.
