First, understand clearly: PCE spending and the PCE Price Index are two different concepts

The Personal Income and Outlays report released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis covers both how much households spend and changes in consumer prices. When mentioned in news, PCE may refer to Personal Consumption Expenditures or the PCE Price Index. Growth in the former cannot be directly treated as the inflation rate. Readers need to check the table header, units and whether price changes have been adjusted for.

The August report released on September 30, 2026 serves as an example: nominal PCE rose 0.9% month-on-month, real PCE increased 0.6% month-on-month, and the PCE Price Index climbed 0.3% month-on-month. These three figures describe different metrics and do not represent three separate inflation readings.

For price metrics, review headline vs core, year-on-year vs month-on-month

The headline PCE Price Index in the same report rose 3.4% year-on-year, while core PCE, excluding food and energy, increased 3.0% year-on-year; core PCE was up 0.2% month-on-month. These figures correspond to August 2026 and cannot be applied directly to other months.

The headline index reflects broad changes in consumer prices, whereas the core index strips out food and energy. Year-on-year figures show price gains over a twelve-month period, and month-on-month data reflects changes in the most recent month. To judge whether inflation is steadily cooling, consecutive monthly readings and major sub-components are required. No conclusion should be drawn based merely on a single in-line figure.

When analysing gold, check whether price data alters expectations for the interest-rate path. An inflation reading above market forecasts may reinforce expectations of sustained high interest rates; a below-consensus reading may trigger the opposite adjustment. The strength or weakness of consumption data must be assessed separately. Expectations should come from pre-release surveys or market pricing, rather than selecting a forecast after the fact to explain market moves.

Distinguish nominal and real consumption growth

Nominal consumption includes price changes, while real consumption removes price effects. Higher spending may stem from greater purchase volumes or rising prices. The report provides both measures to separate these two types of shifts.

Strong real consumption can signal resilient demand, yet it does not guarantee a rate hike at the next policy meeting. Employment, inflation composition, financial conditions and subsequent data will also shape policy judgements.

Do not subtract the real growth rate from the nominal growth rate and treat the result as the precise PCE inflation rate. The index construction and rounding methods used in the official report affect displayed results. Always read the official price index directly instead of back-calculating it from rounded growth rates.

Why income, savings and revision notes are also worth reviewing

Income and savings help assess whether consumption growth has sustainable underpinnings, though single-month changes must be reviewed alongside income sources. One-off income, subsidy adjustments and asset income can skew aggregate figures. Growth in personal income should not be equated entirely with wage growth.

Do not skip the revision notes at the end of the report. The August 2026 report included annual updates with revisions to some historical estimates. If comparing prior readings from the new report against older news releases, discrepancies should first be checked against data versions instead of immediately assuming data errors.

For practical reading, record price indicators, nominal and real consumption, income and savings, and historical revisions in sequence, then observe concurrent reactions in the US dollar and bond yields.
