The Fed statement is far more than a simple announcement of “rate hike” or “rate cut”

When reading the Federal Reserve’s statement, you should not only focus on whether the federal funds rate has changed. Policy decisions, inflation assessments, labour market descriptions, risk statements and voting results together form market signals. The statement released by the Fed on 16 September 2026 raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4.00%, with a 12-0 vote. The statement also noted that inflation remains elevated, and geopolitical developments keep uncertainty high.

For gold, the first step is to confirm the factual policy outcome, and the second step is to assess whether the market has already priced it in. If a rate hike was widely anticipated, the factor that truly moves prices may be the guidance on the future path within the statement, rather than this policy move itself.

All specific wording refers to the September statement. Policy actions, inflation commentary and voting results should be reviewed separately. The unanimous vote in September alone does not guarantee unanimous rate hikes at future meetings. It is necessary to keep tracking subsequent data releases and policy communications.

Focus on four key sections

First, the rate decision. The target range reflects the rate choice made at this meeting. To gauge how restrictive the policy is, you also need to consider inflation and other financial conditions. Compare the outcome with pre-meeting market expectations. A decision in line with expectations may not trigger sharp price swings, while an unexpected outcome can trigger rapid repricing.

Second, inflation wording. Phrases such as “inflation remains elevated”, “inflation is moving toward the 2% target” and “inflation risks have re-emerged” carry different meanings. The first describes the current situation, while the other two address trends and risks respectively. Gold’s reaction must be analysed alongside real interest rates, the US Dollar and US Treasury yields. You cannot directly predict price rises or falls based on a single phrase.

Third, employment and economic activity. If the statement mentions softer employment alongside solid economic activity, the market will reassess the Fed’s trade-off between inflation and jobs. Weakening employment may fuel expectations of policy easing, yet persistent high inflation could keep policy restrictive for longer.

Fourth, votes and risks. Whether the vote is unanimous and whether the statement emphasises uncertainty help reveal divisions within the committee. Voting results are not standalone directional signals for gold, but they help you judge how stable the projected policy path is.

Why might gold rally then fall after the statement release?

Price reactions usually unfold in three phases: an immediate knee-jerk reaction upon release, repricing by traders, and a confirmed trend driven by the US Dollar and yields. For example, if the statement comes out more hawkish than expected, gold may initially rise on safe-haven buying, then pull back as real yields climb. Conversely, if policy is tightened yet the market believes the hiking cycle is nearing an end, gold may dip briefly before rebounding.

When reviewing the move, record the release time of the statement, the timing of gold’s initial highs and lows, and concurrent changes in the US Dollar Index and US Treasury yields. Only by aligning these timestamps can you analyse the link between the policy news and price action. The rally-then-drop scenario described above is one possible outcome and does not represent the market move for this particular meeting.

How should traders use this type of news?

You can organise the FOMC statement into a checklist: policy action, inflation commentary, employment commentary, risk remarks, voting results and immediate market reaction. Cross-reference this checklist with the Fed’s meeting calendar and exclusive insights from Lucky Gold. Technical levels in exclusive commentary are analytical opinions, while factual policy content from the official statement takes precedence.

The Federal Reserve statement helps you understand the macro backdrop, but it does not constitute personalised investment advice. Before trading, you should also consider quote sources, heightened volatility, slippage and your own risk tolerance.
