Market Review

Spot gold is currently trading around 3720.00 USD per ounce, having fallen from its highs overnight due to hawkish comments from Fed officials. Chicago Fed President Goolsbee's warning against aggressive rate cuts has led to a repricing of easing expectations, putting short-term pressure on gold prices.

Technical Analysis

On the 4-hour chart, the price is oscillating near the middle of the Bollinger Bands, with short-term moving averages showing signs of flattening. Key support is at 3710.00 USD per ounce; if this level holds, it could maintain the high-level oscillation pattern, but a break below might lead to further drops toward the 3680.00 support area. The MACD indicator's bars are contracting, and the RSI indicator has fallen from the overbought region to around 50, indicating increased short-term adjustment pressure. Resistance above is in the 3740.00-3750.00 area, and a breakout above this range would be needed to regain upward momentum.

Driver Analysis

Chicago Fed President Goolsbee has clearly warned that the Fed should not rush into a series of rate cuts, expressing unease about large cuts based on the assumption of "temporary inflation." He noted that the job market is only experiencing "moderate" cooling, with the unemployment rate at 4.30% appearing more optimistic than non-farm payroll data, while inflation is moving in the wrong direction, showing signs of stagflation risks. This stance contrasts sharply with officials like San Francisco Fed President Daly, who favor further cuts, highlighting clear divisions within the Fed. Although Goolsbee leaves room for additional cuts, he emphasizes the need to balance inflation risks and employment stability, which is suppressing market expectations.
