1. News developments

The Federal Reserve remains alert to inflation pressure from the AI investment boom. According to a Reuters report dated October 19, aggressive expansion by AI companies is lifting demand and price pressure, while the effects of rate hikes fall more heavily on credit-dependent households, small and medium-sized businesses, and non-AI industries. At an International Monetary Fund meeting last week, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh described AI investment as a “shock” to prices and demand.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack told Reuters that higher rates could cool the economy by restraining stock-market gains and slowing activity outside the AI sector. The report expected the Fed to hold rates at 3.75%–4.00% at its October 27–28 meeting, while officials continued discussing the pace and size of further increases.

This policy backdrop keeps pressure on the opportunity cost of holding gold. If AI demand sustains elevated inflation, expectations for lower rates will be constrained, weighing on the appeal of non-yielding gold.

2. The 30-minute candlestick chart

Thirty-minute spot gold chart showing a rebound from the lows followed by a retreat below MA1, MA20 and MA30

Spot gold stood at 4132.27, down 8.48 or 0.20% from the previous close of 4140.75. It opened at 4142.07, with an intraday high of 4147.16 and a low of 4114.89.

On the 30-minute chart, price initially tested lower levels before rebounding, leaving a long lower wick and subsequently recovering above 4140. After approaching recent highs, price retreated again, giving back a substantial part of the rebound.

Price is now below MA1 at 4140.00, MA20 at 4137.03 and MA30 at 4137.31. MA30 remains downward-sloping, putting the short-term recovery under renewed pressure. Regaining MA20 and MA30, followed by MA1, would strengthen the rebound. If these moving averages continue to cap price, the intraday low of 4114.89 will become the main downside level to watch.

3. The 30-minute technical indicators

The 30-minute technical readings as of 12:50 on October 20 are:

Williams %R is -45.519, within the conventional -80 to -20 neutral range; the platform rates it Neutral.

CCI(14) is -41.5634, within the conventional -100 to 100 neutral range; the platform rates it Neutral.

ATR(14) is 7.2946; the platform assesses volatility as low.

Ultimate Oscillator is 49.312, within the conventional 30–70 neutral range and slightly below 50; the platform rates it Neutral.

ROC is -0.088, a negative reading; the platform rates it Sell.

Bull/Bear Power(13) is -10.2078, a negative reading; the platform rates it Sell.

The indicators remain mixed following the rebound. The stochastic indicators still carry Buy ratings, but RSI is below 50 and MACD, ROC and Bull/Bear Power are all negative, leaving overall momentum weak. ADX indicates an established degree of trend strength. With price back below all three moving averages, the short-term focus is whether a rebound can regain and hold the moving-average area.

4. Outlook

Inflation pressure from the AI investment boom makes the Fed’s future rate path an important driver of gold pricing. Stronger rate-hike expectations would keep the rebound under pressure, while easing inflation and softer rate expectations would support a recovery. Technically, regaining 4137.03, 4137.31 and 4140.00 would help revive the rebound. A renewed break below the intraday low of 4114.89 would weaken the short-term outlook further.
